We will begin posting Siouxland Freedom Park Steering Committee minutes. This is in effort to ensure our past, present, and future sponsors and followers are aware of inititiatives and plans for the Park.

Siouxland Freedom Park Minutes from Wednesday July 16th Meeting

Present: Mike Newhouse, Eric Burgness, Bill Johnston, Larry Brostad, Russ Rasmussen, Mike Weaver, Eddie Reddenius, and Jeff Finken

Mike and crew were looking for the right company to concrete the Freedom Park Parking Lot. One Company was too large and basically did not have time for the project. One Company was too small and did not have the resources to do the lot. Ho-Chunk will be asked to see if they can do the in-kind concrete for the lot. We need to assure that the concrete lot cants one way or the other for proper rain/water drainage. Preferable to the west.

On the 6th of July there was a very good article on the Siouxland Freedom Park in the Omaha World Herald.

Fundraising: Kiewit Foundation- we will make a request for money. The next application is due in October.

Dakota County (Vision) Golf Outing is August 4th and proceeds go to the SFP.

Nebraska Extension Service- Volunteerism Group through the Siouxland Y. We will bring kids to the wall to help.

We need signage to direct people to the SFP. Lance can help in this endeavor. We need to get signage as people are coming off of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. We also talked about signage for the plates for the Wall. There is also a website out there to assist in finding plates. Virtual Wall. Org or something to that affect. It can be googled.

Looking to the future, we all agree that some type of event should occur at The Wall during all Veterans Type holidays such as Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veteran’s Day, etc. Possible fireworks and a band for next 4th of July. A mention was made to have a county wide flag retirement ceremony during this upcoming Veteran’s Day.

Side note: We may have a County wide Flag Retirement at the 9-11 ceremony instead, as one does not know what 11 November brings for weather. We would do something else for Veteran’s Day at SFP.

We also need to start thinking of getting work done on the base of the flag pole. We also discussed getting a group of folks to belong to the Flag Raising/Lowering Committee so as we have a calling tree and members who are willing to go out and lower the large flag when sustained winds of 35-40 miles per hour are forecasted.

Goals: Start concrete work on parking lot. Work on the base of the Flag Pole. Get signage and seal any cracks near wall. Update website.

Next meeting proposed for Thursday August 14th, at the South Sioux City Legion.
