A-7 D Aircraft 185th Information 2

Siouxland Freedom Park is the proud home to a piece of history – an A-7 D Corsair II. This aircraft, which flew from 1977 to 1992, was originally designed for close air support and interdiction missions, playing a vital role in military operations. The fighter jet once flown by Sioux City’s 185th Fighter Wing. Its arrival at Siouxland Freedom Park was made possible through the generous donation of Gene Martin, the South Sioux City VFW, and American Legion Post 307.

The process of relocating and restoring the plane involved several steps, careful planning, and support from both the Army and the Air Force. First, the CH-47 unit from the Iowa Army National Guard in Davenport transported the A-7 D by helicopter from Martin’s Airfield to the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City. Once there, the aircraft underwent a full restoration, including washing, sanding, repairs, and a fresh coat of paint to return it to its original condition.

On September 16, 2025, the fully restored A-7 D was moved to its final home at Siouxland Freedom Park, where it is prominently displayed on the front lawn in front of the Interpretive Center on the west side of the building.
