Freedom Rock
Shelter and Reflection Area
The Rock Covering is a visionary concept brought forward by local veteran Brian Crichton in collaboration with CMBA Architects. Designed to honor service members, this structure offers veterans a poignant reminder of undisclosed deployment locations while providing the public with insight into the austere living conditions faced by military personnel. Spanning 30 feet 11 inches in length with an apex height of 13 feet 3 inches, the covering is built to withstand the diverse weather conditions. It will be visible both day and night, featuring directional lighting to enhance its presence after dark. Positioned strategically, the design also invites viewing from across the river in Iowa, drawing attention to Siouxland Freedom Park and Freedom Rock.
A key feature of the structure is the depiction of 11 local heroes on the rock itself. Surrounding the area, 4-foot pillars will be dedicated to each hero, containing their biographies. The framework and pillars are currently in the design phase at Port Neal Welding. This installation will complete the Rock area, which already features benches representing each branch of the military. Additionally, the entrance sidewalk will be lined with Dedication Bricks, ensuring a full, immersive viewing experience from both sides.
